It was not that he did not really want to tell, but the telling of it would have involved an explanation of his entire life.? -Richard Wright Bigger is a product of society. As Hannibal Lecter so poignantly points out in Silence of the Lambs, ?Serial killers aren?t born, they?re made.? Bigger was created; shaped by the limitations naturally put on African-Americans of that time. He was told what he couldn?t do from the moment he was born. He attended schools where he was taught the same things as the white children but when he left he wasn?t able to put that knowledge to use like the white children. Bigger cracked, or ?exploded? because he could not begin to fulfill his ambitions. he allowed what his life meant to enter his consciousness and a young girl suffered the consequence. He?s accomplished his goals to the best of his ability. He?s crossed boundaries that his peers only dream about. If you can?t beat ?em join em, well he couldn?t join ?em so he did his best to beat ?em. What does happen to a dream deferred? what if you never had the possibility of realizing that dream. Isn?t that the same as being hopeless? ?Your honor, remember that men can starve from a lack of self-realization as much as they can from a lack of bread! And they can murder for it too (Max).? A dream deferred doesn?t dry up, it doesn?t fester, they all explode sooner or later.
