Crucible Essay, Research Paper Summary of The Crucible This story takes place during the late 1600’s. In the beginning Abigail, Mary Warren, and Betty were in the forest conjuring up spirits of the dead. They wanted to find out why children were dying in their infancy. Tituba knew how to conjure so she was the one who did it, while the other three danced. One of them was naked, but the reason is yet unknown. A lot of fuss was going on in the first Act. The real fuss was about three girls and their so-called practicing of witchcraft. Another sub-plot develops here when we learn that Abigail had an affair with John Proctor. Also, we see that Rev. Parris is desperately trying to calm the situation in order to dispel any rumorous of witchcraft. As the dialogue is developed we see that there is conflict between Parris and Proctor over some wood that Parris was to have purchased, but hasn’t received as of yet.
